Internship Process

1

Student Applications

5–6 months before the program:

Students apply to CIEE programs through their university or directly through CIEE.

Students interested in an internship apply for internship opportunities as part of their program and may receive academic credit through their university.

2

Student Preparation & Matching

3–4 months before the program:

CIEE staff meet with each of the students online to learn more about their interests, experience, and what they hope to gain from their internship in Japan.

We then begin identifying potential internship opportunities that match their background and goals.

3

Company Outreach & Interviews

2–3 months before the program:

CIEE contacts organizations with potential student matches and shares information about the student and internship opportunity. If the organization is interested, we arrange an interview between the student and the company.

This gives both sides an opportunity to learn more about each other and decide whether the internship is a good fit.

The placement is confirmed only after both the student and organization agree.

4

Placement Confirmation & Agreements

1–2 months before the program:

Once the internship is confirmed, CIEE coordinates the the internship agreements with the student and host company.

Companies provide information about their intern first day.

CIEE also prepares online orientations for students and companies for their upcoming experience.

5

Student Arrives in Japan

Program start

Students arrive in Japan and participate in their CIEE orientation and program activities.

Usually within 1–2 days of arriving in Japan, students begin their internship with their host organization.

From this point, the student follows the agreed internship schedule and works with the organization until the final day of the program.

6

Internship & Ongoing Support

During the program:

The student works directly with the host organization according to the agreed schedule, responsibilities, and workplace procedures. The host organization manages the student's day-to-day internship experience.

CIEE supports both the student and supervisor if questions or concerns arise and conducts a midterm check-in to make sure the internship is progressing smoothly.

7

Final Evaluation & Program Completion

End of the program:

The student completes their internship on the final day of the CIEE program.

At the end of the internship, CIEE asks the supervisor to complete a final evaluation and provide feedback on the student's performance and development.

The student then completes the academic requirements of their program and returns to their university or continues with their studies.
